Overview
We add internal or external lifts to shoes to help correct leg length discrepancies, post-surgical recovery, or chronic imbalance. Everything is measured and modified on-site, ensuring the shoe looks good and functions better.

Shoe Lifts
Shoe lifts are a simple yet highly effective solution for addressing leg length differences and improving overall posture and gait. Whether due to surgery, injury, or a natural difference in leg length, lifts can reduce strain on your hips, knees, and back—helping you walk more comfortably and with greater stability.

Frequently asked question
A shoe lift (also called a shoe elevation) is a modification added to the sole of a shoe to help correct a leg length discrepancy (LLD) or accommodate for structural or functional issues in the lower body. The lift helps level the pelvis and improve gait mechanics.
You might benefit from a shoe lift if you’ve been diagnosed with a leg length discrepancy or if you're experiencing symptoms like hip, lower back, or knee pain that worsen with walking. A Certified Pedorthist or other medical professional can assess your needs and recommend the right lift height and placement.
Shoe lifts are commonly used to treat:
- Leg length discrepancy (LLD)
- Post-surgical leg shortening
- Hip or knee replacement recovery
- Pelvic tilt or spinal alignment issues
- Chronic hip, back, or lower limb pain related to imbalance
In most cases, yes. We can often add lifts to most shoes with sturdy soles. However, some shoes work better than others. We’ll assess your footwear and let you know if it's suitable or if a different pair is recommended.
Internal lifts (placed inside the shoe) are typically used for small discrepancies up to about ¼" (6mm). External lifts (added to the outsole) can go much higher. We’ll determine the best approach based on your comfort, needs, and footwear.
We do our best to make lifts as discreet as possible, color-matching the materials and blending the design with your shoe. Many patients are surprised at how subtle the final result looks.
A prescription isn’t always required, but for insurance coverage or AADL approval in Alberta, a referral or prescription from a healthcare provider (such as a physician or physiotherapist) is usually necessary.
Shoe lifts are often covered under extended health benefits or through Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) if you qualify by having a prescription and requiring a lift above 2cm. We’re happy to guide you through the paperwork and help you check your coverage.
Insurance & Billing
Most insurance providers cover lift modifications with a doctor’s prescription. We provide all necessary receipts and documentation. We also work closely with AADL and can direct bill for a leg length discrepancy over 2cm’s. Otherwise the patient is required to pay and can then submit to their provider for reimbursement, please talk to your provider for your list of coverage.
